Professor Balandin is a UCR team member of the CNID: UCSB-UCR-UCLA. CNID projects are led by Professor Robert Haddon (UCR), Professor David Awschalom (UCSB) and Professor Eli Yablonovitch (UCLA).
The role of the Nano-Device Laboratory in the UCR activities conducted under this project is to carry out theoretical and computer simulation research of phonon spectrum in nanostructures, and investigate a possibility of tuning the phonon spectrum in a desired way.
A control of phonon spectrum in nanostructures via proper selection of structure size, geometry, acoustic impedance mismatch and boundary conditions offers a great potential in nanodevice applications. The tuning of the phonon spectrum in a desired way may result in carrier-phonon scattering rate suppression, long coherence times for electron spins, modification of lattice thermal conductivity, etc. [1-3].
